Ellerslie Punter of the Year
2011 date and event details yet to be confirmed

The Ellerslie Punter of the Year competition held on Telecom Derby Day 2010 proved to be a very competitive and spirited battle between some of the country’s leading punters.

In excess of $128,000 was invested in the competition amongst the 47 syndicates that entered.

The winning syndicate Plan A, who took home the first prize of $20,000 cash, had a balance of just $50 going into Race 7. After the horses crossed the line they thought they had done their chips, having taken a $50 quinella bet that finished 1st and 3rd. But luck was on their side - the subsequent enquiry resulted in a collect of $1085.  In the ensuing three races they were able to accumulate a final balance of $22,000 which was enough to beat the leader the Hot Racer syndicate.

The Hot Racers had established what looked to be a winning lead with a series of poker bets through early winners Delegator, Natsinga and Obsession.  If Chaumont was to have won the last race they would have been up for a collect of $85,000.  A sterling effort nonetheless and enough to take home the highest turnover prize of $1000.
